Cost of Lantus insulin

Would it be cheaper to switch to Lantus multi dose vials instead of the solostar pens?  Cost has increased x6 due to medicare gap.  Please factor in the cost of syringes also.  thanks,

Thank you for your question.  I am happy to give you more information on how to make the decision between vials and pens for the Lantus based on cost.

The quick answer is on a unit to unit, out of pocket purchase, with no insurance considerations the Lantus vials plus syringes are less expensive than the Solostar pens plus pen needles.  However, there are a couple of things to consider:

1. Every Medicare Part D plan contracts independently with pharmacies for a contracted price on all medications.  Most Medicare D plans will allow you to go onto their website and select the pharmacy you want to get your prescription from and will give you a price on the medication for that specific pharmacy.  When you are in the gap you are responsible for the plan’s contracted price of the medication, not the cash price.

2. Lantus vials and pens are only good for 28 days once the first injection is drawn or injected regardless of refrigeration (based on manufacturers’ recommendations).  The Lantus vial contains 1000 units whereas a box of Solostar pens contains 1500 units (5 pens containing 300 units apiece).  If you are using less than 1000 units every 28 days (less than 35 units per day), it may actually be more cost effective to go the route of the Solostar pens since the 28 day expiration would not start until you started using the pen.

Hope this helps to answer the question.  Have a great day and Be Well!
